Research Focus in a Nutshell
With the computing world at the verge of a major transition, the LUCENT lab takes extreme pride in building computing paradigms for the future. Traditional Von Neuman computing systems (CPUs, GPUs, …) are unable to offer sufficient "GFlops/Watt" for the energy/memory intensive AI algorithms. We at the LUCENT lab consider this an opportune time to build non-Von Neuman computers using novel technologies such as silicon photonics and resistive memory. To this end, researchers at LUCENT have recently demonstrated a completely analog photonic backpropagation accelerator ( Dang et al., IEEE/ACM DAC 2020) which is first of its kind in the literature.
